Tintin, a young journalist, and his dog Snowy are browsing in an outdoor market in a European town. After a chase down to the harbour, pursued by Tintin and Haddock, Sakharine finally escapes with all three scrolls. Tintin chases him back to Europe and arranges a police reception for him on the dockside. Haddock and Sakharine, who is revealed to be the descendant of Red Rackham, replay their ancestors’ swashbuckling sword fight, using dockside cranes, and Haddock is eventually victorious.

The one bum note is struck by Isla Fisher as Burke’s would-be girlfriend Ginny, but it’s hardly her fault: her Scots accent just about holds to the end of the movie, but her part feels awkwardly bolted on to provide romantic interest and frisson. It doesn’t work: when the rest of the plot concerns dastardly deeds done down dark alleys, the sight of Pegg and Fisher making eyes at one another feels clumsy and inappropriate.
Landis directs like an old pro, cluttering the screen with intriguing little details (surgical tools, scientific equipment, body parts) and displaying a nice line in absurdist comic asides. The humour may be too broad in places – corpse-based slapstick pales with repetition – but, for the most part, ‘Burke and Hare’ is well-timed and often funny. Whether we ought to be laughing at this sort of thing is another matter, and reading into the actual facts of the case (most of the victims were women, Hare shopped Burke to save his own skin) does leave the movie feeling slightly vulgar and tasteless – but doesn’t prevent it from being highly entertaining. The Traveller is an Egyptian film that follows Hassan on three different days in his life in three different places. In Port Said 1948, Hassan (El Nabawy) meets Nura (Abdel Nour),who he initially charms but ultimately rapes aboard a ship. In Alexandria 1973, Nura’s daughter Nadia reaches out to a much older Hassan (Sharif) upon the death of her last remaining family member; her twin brother. Upon meeting her, he realises that he is her father, but ultimately shirks the responsibility that comes with the discovery. In Cairo 2001, Hassan meets his grandson Aly (Ramzy) and tries to establish a connection with him.
To say that this film is muddled, vague and confusing is an understatement. You won’t understand much while watching it, but a few hours and a couple of thousand brain cells later; you’ll start to piece together your own personal interpretation of the story and the characters. In this reviewer’s opinion, the film is trying to say something about both masculinity and family.
Hassan’s first conversation with Nura involves her telling him about her admiration for brave men. A short while later he rapes her after telling her that he knows she likes her men daring and forward; almost as if justifying the assault. Hassan rapes Nura as a way of living up to expectations of masculinity, as well as her own thrill-seeking carefree approach to life. During the second act, these same expectations ended up killing their son, who dies in the middle of a foolhardy stunt.
In the third act, upon meeting Hassan as an old man, we find that he is still as susceptible as ever to society’s definition of masculinity. He goads his grandson into picking a fight, hits on an attractive doctor and glorifies dangerously stupid, highly macho acts that supposedly prove your worth as a man. In contrast to his grandfather, Aly isn’t as confined by these constructs. You also get the feeling that Aly is, more or less, happy the way he is and that he only caves to his grandfather’s pressure in an attempt to forge a deeper connection with his deceased uncle and namesake.
The familial theme is slightly less obscure. The film shows Hassan’s growth over the years. When it starts out vibram five fingers shoes , his only interest is getting the girl no matter what. During the second act, he realizes that his actions bore him children that he has no desire to take responsibility for. Upon growing old, he yearns for a family and attempts to delude himself into thinking that he might have had a relationship with the son whose existence he was never aware of until his death. As the younger Hassan, El Nabawy comes across as predatory and sleazy while Sharif, as the older version of Hassan, plays the befuddled and lonely old man very well. The problem lies in the disconnect between the stages and in the fact that both Nura and Nadia, as the film’s victims, come across as highly passive and completely spineless. On the other hand, Ramzy’s Aly is possibly the only well-rounded character. He is allowed to come across as strong yet vulnerable, smart but impressionable; making him one of the more interesting characters.
The Traveller is not a commercial film nor is it trying to be. It may not entertain you, it may even infuriate you but it will get you thinking – even if just to make sense of it. In addition, it’s worth a watch just for the novelty of seeing an Egyptian period piece.

In the end, “The Tree of Life” is going to be remembered for its philosophy, rather than for its technical expertise. It’s the kind of thing that Malick fans have been awaiting. Malick is a graduate of Harvard with a degree in Philosophy as well as an MIT philosophy professor. One need not be religious to appreciate the movie’s philosophy. Although it stems from a Judeo-Christian viewpoint, the real message of the film is the universal idea of love and human dignity. People who prefer linear and easier to understand movies are not going to appreciate this message. Those who are not Malick fans are going to have little respect for this fine film. They’re going to dissect “The Tree of Life” and dismiss it as they have his other works because they feel that the cerebral and the spiritual are not compatible. Malick is an easy target because showing that there’s compatibility between that which is cerebral and that which is spiritual is considered to be intellectual heresy.
It’s true that “2001″ and “The Tree of Life” both take on themes and ideas that are very similar. Both claim the existence of a higher power, and even support their views with prologues about evolution that show man’s place in the world. However, Kubrick was concerned where man was going and Malick is concerned with the condition of man. The world should appreciate the efforts of both Malick and Kubrick, although it may need Malick a little more today.

Some say that all houses have memories. For one man, his home is the place he would kill to forget. Successful publisher Will Atenton (Craig) quit a job in New York City to relocate his wife, Libby (Weisz), and two girls to a quaint New England town. But as they settle into their new life, they discover their perfect home was the murder scene of a mother and her children.
And the entire city believes it was at the hands of the husband who survived. When Will investigates the tragedy, his only lead comes from Ann Paterson (Watts), a neighbor who was close to the family that died. As Will and Ann piece together the disturbing puzzle, they discover that the story of the last man to leave Will’s dream house will be just as horrifying to the one who came next.
In 1948, RKO Studios needed a rural setting in which to film exteriors for their comedy ‘Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House’.
