I Don’t Know How She Does It a comedy from director Douglas McGrath (Emma Infamous) and producer Donna Gigliotti (The Reader Let Me In). Based on the critically acclaimed bestseller by Allison Pearson I Don’t Know How She Does It follows a Boston-based working mother trying desperately to juggle marriage children and a high-stress job.
Kate Reddy (Parker) devotes her days to her job with a Boston-based financial management firm. At night she goes home to her adoring recently-downsized architect husband Richard (Kinnear) and their two young children. It’s a non-stop balancing act the same one that Kate’s acerbic best friend and fellow working mother Allison (Christina Hendricks) performs on a daily basis and that Kate’s super-brainy child-phobic young junior associate Momo (Olivia Munn) fully intends to avoid. When Kate gets handed a major new account that will require frequent trips to New York Richard also wins the new job he’s been hoping for’and both will be spreading themselves even thinner. Complicating matters is Kate’s charming new business associate Jack Abelhammer (Brosnan) who begins to prove an unexpected source of temptation.

It’s tough to hear a Sarah Jessica Parker voiceover and not immediately think ‘ and the City? Where??’ But SJP’s latest project isn’t a third big-screen outing ‘ it’s an adaptation of Allison Pearson’s best-selling novel I Don’t Know How She Does It which follows a woman who simultaneously manages a hedge fund and her two young children.
The movie looks like it’ll hit the same chick flick sweet spot as other ‘work vs. personal life’ films like The Devil Wears Prada ‘ and as a bonus it co-stars Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks who should probably be in every movie. (Hopefully though she has more to do in the final cut than she does in this trailer.) I Don’t Know is set to be released this September. Check out the clip below the cut. This scintillating first novel has already taken its author’s native England by storm and in the tradition of Bridget Jones to which it is likely to be compared will almost certainly do the same here. The Bridget comparison has only limited validity however: both books have a winning female protagonist speaking in a diary-like first person and both have quirkily formulaic chapter endings. But Kate is notably brighter wittier and capable of infinitely deeper shadings of feeling than the flighty Bridget and her book cuts deeper. She is the mother of a five-year-old girl and a year-old boy living in a trendy North London house with her lower-earning architect husband and is a star at her work in an aggressive City of London brokerage firm.
