The twentieth century was one of the most formative time periods in human history. The two most destructive wars ever happened within 25 years of one another. The television, internet, film, music, and other technological breakthroughs developed at increasingly fast speeds.
Throughout history, people have always had different outlooks on sexual activity. During Roman times, it was quite common for wealthy people to hold orgies at their homes at which multiple people would have sex with each other. Homosexuality was also a commonplace affair. This was also the case during the times of ancient Greece. It is even said that famous philosophers such as Socrates had homosexual relationships at different points.
After Christianity was founded, a more conservative approach to جنس began to dominate. Many followers of Jesus interpreted his ascetic lifestyle and denial of pleasure as a call for sexual chastity. The logic was such that any pleasure was seen as sinful. This conservative impulse became more and more entrenched in the Western world over time. In the Muslim world, a similarly conservative view of sexual activity came to prominence. All around the world, it seemed, people were becoming more and more disconnected from their sexual natures.
The height of Western chastity occurred during the 1950′s. The two-parent household and nuclear family were the norm, and gender ideals were virtually set in stone. Females were discouraged from masturbation and fewer women than ever before were willing to seek self-pleasure.
In the 1960′s, everything changed. The conservatism of the previous decade gave way to a time defined by liberalism, free love, and sexual promiscuity. Young people shed the chains of sexual chastity put on them by the previous generation and set out to explore their sexuality in new and innovative ways. Spaces of communal living emerged in which hundreds of young people would spend all of their time together. The natures of personal relationships and of group dynamics were invariably changed by these new living arrangements. Social and جنس relations seemed to change and transform themselves at an incredible pace during these times. Aging hippies now look back on this decade as one of the most important times in their lives. Indeed, the anti-war and civil rights actions led by this youth movement did seem to change the course of history forever. Nowadays, young people are much less engaged with political and social issues. Additionally, sexual attitudes have once again taken a relatively conservative slant.
